Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This Area Engineer (PCE II) position works in the District Five office located in Winfield, KS. This position provides professional administrative management and direction of all phases of construction, maintenance, fiscal, and personnel matters in a designated Area. The Area Engineer represents the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) with cities, counties and local citizens.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Directly responsible for the maintenance of state highway and KDOT property in the area.
- Directly responsible for the administration of construction contracts in the area.
- Directly responsible for the supervision of Construction Engineers, 1 Maintenance Superintendent, and 1 Area Office Manager.
- Meets with local government officials to address their needs in relation to the state highway system.
- Assists KDOTs Bureau of Design in developing scope for state highway projects.
- Attends training pertinent to the proper performance of the duties assigned and provides training to subordinates and peers.
- Provides guidance to the administrative personnel in the Area for fiscal functions, including purchases, vendor payments, capital and consumable inventories to assure agency guidelines are followed.
- Performs other duties as assigned from District Engineer.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
- Six years of experience in engineering.
- Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three years of supervisor experience.
- Strong organizational and training skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates, public officials and the public.
